YOUR PROJECT AND WORK:
The Île d'Aix has a long and animated marine and naval history. As a happy consequence the island plays host to many historical sites, notably Fort Liedot. Constructed in the early 19th century to defend the island from naval attacks, it later came to be used as a prison. Now it’s a touristic place.

The fort needs regular maintenance as well as restoration work, and for this reason it has played host to many international workcamps Last summer a workcamp was held to restore and improve the paths in and around the stronghold. This year, a group of 12 international volunteers will continue this work.

This will also be an occasion for the volunteers and the local residents to interact with and learn from each other. World Heritage and sustainable development will be main topics of discussion, and educational activities will be organized to help raise awareness of these issues. Volunteers will also have the chance to learn traditional renovation methods while working on the site. The realization of this project will not only mean the enhancement of the fort, but that a large group of people will better understand the importance of protecting our world.

Technical objectives:
The work will consist in the restoration of the walls of Fort Liédot's rempart walk:
- to clear away the earth
- to rebuild the damaged parts of the wall with stones and rubble stones, thanks to the lime mortar
- to put back the weepers to facilitate the passage of water
- to improve the drainage

Since the place is protected as a Historical Monument and necessitates to be particularly careful, we will be advised by M. Bartczak who is an architect.of French historic building
A technical leader and a person from the municipality will be there to help you in the technical achievement of the project.

THE TEAM:
There will be approximately 12 volunteers in the group, with two campleaders, who will organize with you the everyday life. The team will manage a budget to make the purchases and everyone will cook in turn. Don't forget to bring recipes from your country ! The languages used on the workcamp are usually English and French.
